How to Prepare for the Unexpected - Car Accidents
The last thing any of us want to think about is getting into a car accident while we’re away on a fun road trip. Something like that can really ruin your vacation! Being prepared can help things go more smoothly in the hopefully unlikely event that you do get into an accident. Here are a few tips you can follow:
1. Keep a cell phone in the car.
These days, many people have cell phones they carry everywhere. However, if you’re one of the few who don’t, it’s a good idea to buy a disposable cell phone and keep it in your car. Then if you get into an accident in an out-of-the-way place, you can call 911 yourself and get help quickly, rather than possibly having to wait a long time until help arrives.
2. Keep emergency numbers in your cell phone.
Surveys show that people who survive accidents in spite of serious injuries are those who were attended immediately by health experts. The emergency numbers in your phone can help those doctors and nurses greatly. If they can talk to a friend or family member who knows vital information about your medical history - for instance, what medications you might be taking, any life-threatening drug allergies, or your blood type - it can reduce the amount of time before they can give you life-saving treatment.
3. Learn the area.
If you’re driving in another country - or even in some of the more unique ares of your own - become familiar with the road signs and traffic rules before you try to drive. This isn’t just a good idea for avoiding traffic tickets; making errors that other drivers aren’t expecting can definitely lead to accidents.
4. Keep your cool.
Stay calm while you’re driving and avoid accidents. You might be running late for something, but is it worth getting in an accident? Take a deep breath (or ten), and recognize that you’ll get there when you get there - but you’ll get there a lot faster if you don’t get in an accident and don’t get stopped for speeding. And next time, leave a little earlier.
Stay calm when accidents occur and save yourself a lot of heartache. Keeping a cool head in the middle of a crisis can make the difference between life and death. Don’t panic. Use your cell to call 911 and then assess your situation before taking any action. Sometimes the best thing to do is wait for the professionals to arrive.
