Maintaining Good Health While Traveling

Getting sick right in the middle of a trip you’ve been planning for months is just awful. Instead of going out and seeing the sights, you’re confined to your hotel room. But there are a few things you can do to avoid this situation.

First of all, start your trip off in good shape. Plan ahead so you don’t have a huge amount of stress in the last hours trying to get ready to go. If you don’t already exercise regularly, start up a walking or other exercise program a few months before so you’re ready for the long tours and other physical exertions you’ll face.

Research the place(s) where you’re going. You need to know about the weather and climate for the time of year when you’re traveling so you can pack clothes that are appropriate. Wearing clothes that are too warm or too thin can put your body under stress and make you sick. You also want to check on the condition of the drinking water. You don’t want to accidentally drink the water when you shouldn’t; that can make you very sick, indeed.

Next up is food. If you’re visiting an exotic locale, you might be in for several days of eating an unfamiliar diet. Imodium pills (or similar) can help a lot if you end up with a sore tummy from unusual food. That doesn’t mean the food tastes bad or is bad; it just means that your body isn’t used to it and might rebel a little. Speaking of pills, if you take medications on a regular basis, make sure you bring enough to last the whole trip, and prepare them so you have no problems going through customs. You don’t want to run out or have them seized.

Take some snacks on the plane, and buy some water after you get through the security checkpoint (as I’m writing this, you’re now allowed to take water on the plane if you bought it after you passed through security). On a long flight, the flight attendants run out of bottled water early and then you get tap water. Trust me, airplane tap water is not something you want to drink if you can avoid it. Take an extra bottle of water and save it until later in the flight. Remember also to get up and stretch or walk around periodically, so your blood will circulate properly on a long flight.

Now go and have a wonderful trip.
