Visit the San Diego Wild Animal Park
Spread over 1,800 acres, the San Diego Wild Animal Park is the best place in San Diego to see wild animals because it gives animals the space they need to live. Visitors get the opportunity to see animals playing and interacting the same way they would in the wilds of their native Africa or Asia.
While the small animal exhibits are a sight to see, you definitely don’t want to miss the opportunity to see the park through one of the “special experiences” offered. These include such adventures as photo caravans, a zipline “tour,” and a rolling safari on a Segway. See giraffes, rhinos and gazelles as they come right up to your caravan.
The animal park is located roughly 35 miles north of San Diego in Escondido. As many of the animals are early risers, it can be a good idea to get to the park early yourself. The naturalistic habitats for the animals allow them to hide, so if they are hiding — or retreating from the heat of the day — they may not be as easy to see.
California’s hot, and you’ll want to plan for that. If you get there early, walk for a bit while it’s still somewhat cooler, and plan to go on a special experience later in the day when you’re ready to sit down for a while. Don’t forget to take your sunscreen, since you’ll be out in the sun much of the day, rainy days notwithstanding. If you’re prone to burn or don’t have much hair up top, a hat might be a good idea. Also remember to drink plenty of fluids so you don’t get dehydrated.
